Erasmus Mundus plan (September 2027 start)

Prepared: 18 Oct 2026, for Atif (BS CS, FAST-NUCES, CGPA 3.41/4, AI Software Engineer I) Constraints used: no IELTS (use FAST's English-medium "MOI" letter), no GRE, fully funded only.

✅ = checked on the official programme site on 18 Oct 2026. ⚠️ = unverified or inferred. An Erasmus Mundus scholarship pays tuition and insurance plus €1,400/month for up to 24 months (about €33.6k), with no bond requiring you to return home. Odds are low (DEAI: ~25 scholarships from ~3,000 applicants last year ✅), so treat this as a free extra shot running alongside the Germany plan (Germany masters plan.md), not instead of it.

1. What changed from the original Plan A

The main report suggested three programmes: EMAI, CoDaS and DEAI. After checking their official sites:

Not possible without IELTS: EDISS (data-intensive software, very good fit, deadline 12 Jan 2027) and CYBERSURE (cybersecurity, deadline 4 Jan 2027) both reject Pakistani MOI letters and accept only IELTS/TOEFL. If you ever change your mind about IELTS, these two are worth it. Book by early November.

2. Your new Plan A

A1. DEAI – Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Data Engineering and Artificial Intelligence

  • Route: Sem 1 at ULB Brussels (coordinator) → Sem 2 at UPC Barcelona → summer school → Sem 3 specialisation at TU Wien (knowledge-driven data management), Padua (business & financial data science) or Lyon 1 (heterogeneous systems) → Sem 4 thesis in industry or a lab. You graduate with three degrees (ULB + UPC + specialisation university). 2 years, 120 ECTS ✅
  • Scholarship: full = tuition + insurance + €1,400/month × 24. There's also a partial award (tuition only) ✅. At most 10% of awards can go to one nationality ✅

    • Deadline: 11 Jan 2027, 12:00 GMT (= 5:00 PM Pakistan time). Strict.
    • Reference letters (uploaded by referees): 18 Jan 2027

  • Fee: none ✅
  • English: MOI letter accepted ✅ (a test certificate is "preferred", but English isn't scored). PTE 59 also accepted. Duolingo not accepted.

    • The self-evaluation Excel file. Fill it in exactly as instructed. Altering it or filling it wrongly means automatic exclusion.
    • Optional but scored: work experience proof and 0–3 reference letters. Referees are scored on their reputation and H-index, so pick a FAST professor who publishes.
  • How they score you ✅: share of CS credits in your degree, average grade (converted by the Excel file), other studies, years of IT work experience (this is where you gain), cover letter, references. No interview mentioned ⚠️
  • Tip ✅: early submissions are checked for missing files and you're told in time to fix them. Submit by mid-December.
  • Site: DEAI official site (search "Erasmus Mundus DEAI ULB"); read the Application Manual V1.0 (Sept 2026) before starting.

A2. MAIA – Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Medical Imaging and Applications

  • Route: Universitat de Girona (Spain), Université Bourgogne Europe (France), Università di Cassino (Italy) ✅
  • Scholarship: Erasmus Mundus scholarships confirmed for the 2027–29 intake ✅ (standard rate ⚠️)
  • Dates: scholarship round tentatively Nov 2026 – Feb 2027 ⚠️. The exact deadline isn't posted yet, so check weekly from November.
  • English: MOI letter accepted (official university letter) ✅. Otherwise IELTS 6.5 / B2. PTE unclear. Duolingo not accepted.
  • GRE: not mentioned
  • Why you're a strong fit: your retinal multimodal deep-learning project is exactly this field. Make it the centre of your motivation letter, and put it on arXiv before applying.

3. Month-by-month roadmap

Late Oct 2026Ask 3 referees now, before the December holidays: a publishing FAST professor (ideally your final-year project supervisor), a second professor, and your Imperium manager. Tell them the letters are due 18 Jan 2027.
Early Nov 2026Send the emails in Section 4. Get experience letters from Imperium and SharkStack. Start the retinal-imaging write-up for arXiv.
Nov 2026Write a Europass CV. Fill in the DEAI self-evaluation Excel carefully (count your CS credits honestly against your transcript). Draft the DEAI cover letter: data engineering + AI, your production LLM/RAG systems, why the ULB→UPC→specialisation path. Watch for the MAIA call opening.
1–15 Dec 2026Submit DEAI (aim for 15 Dec so the early check can flag missing files). Post the arXiv preprint.
Dec 2026 – Jan 2027Submit MAIA once the call is open (motivation letter centred on medical imaging). Submit IFRoS only if scholarships are confirmed.

Feb – Mar 2027Results: DEAI ~Feb ⚠️, MAIA ~spring ⚠️. You may land on a reserve list, which often moves when selected students decline. Keep the Germany applications going regardless (Germany deadlines run Mar–Jul, so there's no clash).
If selected (Mar–Apr 2027)Accept quickly (deadlines are usually about 2 weeks). The consortium sends a scholarship + admission letter, which counts as your proof of funds, so no blocked account is needed.
Apr – Jul 2027Student visa for the first-semester country: Belgium (DEAI, ULB Brussels) or Spain (MAIA, Girona). Apply as soon as the letter arrives ⚠️ (check the Belgian/Spanish visa process and wait times in Pakistan). HEC/MOFA-attested documents needed. Withdraw from German universities once the visa is secured.
Aug – Sep 2027Travel. Programme starts in September.
If not selectedContinue with the Germany plan (already running). Don't go self-funded: DEAI is €9,000/yr + living costs, which is over budget.

Bottom line: apply to DEAI + MAIA (+ IFRoS if funded) by January. It costs only effort. If either comes through, you save your PKR 50 lakh. If not, nothing is lost, because the Germany applications start right after.
